Not because they were stronger. But because they had learned to change their relationship to pain.

According to Fitzgerald, performance does not come from sheer willpower, but from the ability to deal with discomfort. The body sends warning signals long before it is really at its limit. Learning to understand these signals instead of immediately giving in to them pushes boundaries - in sport and in life.

Mindset instead of motivation

Motivation is fleeting. What really counts is what Fitzgerald calls „perceived effort“. The better you learn to control it, the longer you stay in the game.

This means that not every training session has to be heroic. But every workout can build mental strength.

What you can take away from this for your training

Accept the uncomfortable. Progress rarely feels easy.

Train your mind with. Visualization, breathing techniques and self-talk are real tools - not esoteric.

Celebrate stress. Pain is not an enemy, but a feedback system.

Reflect after every training session. Not just: „How was the time?“ - but: „How did I deal with resistance?“

Conclusion

Fitzgerald's book is not a classic motivational guide. It is an invitation to understand training in a new way - as mental work. Because in the end, it's not the perfect preparation that counts, but the answer to a simple question: how much do you really want it?

In der Fitnesswelt reden wir viel über Muskeln, Ernährung und Trainingspläne.
