Alzheimer's & Sport - How physical activity protects our brain

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia - and one of the biggest healthcare challenges of the 21st century. There is no definitive cure as yet, but one factor is becoming increasingly important in research: Movement. Numerous studies show that physical activity not only strengthens physical health, but also makes a decisive contribution to brain health and possibly reduces the risk of Alzheimer's or slows its progression.


Why exercise is important for the brain

Even moderate physical activity appears to significantly reduce the risk of dementia. Analyses of several studies show that physically active people have a lower risk of Alzheimer's compared to inactive people. Physical activity works via several mechanisms:

  • Improved blood circulation in the brain - more oxygen & nutrients
  • Reduced inflammatory processes
  • Increase in neurotrophins - Substances that promote the growth of nerve cells
  • Increased metabolism and energy flow in brain cells

Regular exercise modulates these processes in such a way that the brain becomes more resilient in the long term.

The latest research findings

Current neurological studies show: It doesn't have to be extreme sport to have a positive effect. Already 3,000-5,000 steps daily can help prevent cognitive decline in people with early signs of Alzheimer's disease. slow down, by, among other things, reducing the progression of disease-associated proteins.

How much exercise is optimal?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week for adults - this corresponds to around 2.5 hours of moderate exercise such as brisk walking or cycling. This activity alone is already associated with a significant reduction in the risk of dementia.

Exercise helps - but it is not a panacea

Although physical activity can improve many things, it is no guarantee against Alzheimer's. Some studies indicate that physical activity is not equally effective everywhere - for example, when Alzheimer's is already clinically pronounced. Nevertheless, many research studies show that exercise can at least slow down the rate of cognitive decline and improve quality of life.

Exercise is not a substitute for medical treatment, but it is a Powerful tool for the prevention of various diseases.

Even moderate exercise helps to keep brain cells active. And physical activity brings benefits at any age.

Exercise acts like a protective shield for our brain. The earlier and more continuously we become active, the more we can support our cognitive health and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.
